7 Spring Season Maintenance Tips!

Maintaining a home goes beyond the simple day to day chores we all know and love. It is important to maintain your home at a high level so that your investment is protected.  When you are ready to up-size, downsize or just fall in love with another home, you can do so without delay.  Different seasons bring different tasks. Below are the Spring season tips we recommend.

#1 - Clean your Gutters and Downspouts - This will take a ladder and some elbow grease! Put those old gardening or work gloves on and get up there and remove any and all debris by hand. Use a garden hose to spray out any leftover gunk. While you are doing this make sure that your downspouts expel water at least five feet from your foundation. If not, head to to your local hardware store for some extensions.

#2 - Clean/Replace Filters - Clean or replace your HVAC, water, range and microwave filters. This should be done every 3-6 months depending on the filter and is a very important task to complete to maintain the life of these components and extend them as long as possible.

#3 - Clean out Dryer Vent - A clogged dryer vent is a fire hazard. Disconnect the vent from the dryer and use a dryer vent brush to remove lint. Do the same on the other end where the vent exits the home and make sure the vent hood flap moves freely.

#4 - Operate all Windows -  This one may sound silly, but it is important to open and close your windows every season. Windows expand in the hot and contract in the cold causing them to stick if not operated often.

#5 - Change Batteries and/or update your Smoke and CO Detectors - Batteries should be replaced once per year and the unit themselves should be replaced every 10 years per most manufactures. Check the date on the units and replace as needed. You should have a CO detector on every floor of the home and smoke alarms should be installed in each bedroom, outside of each sleeping area (hallway) and on every level of the home.

#6 - Flush Water Heater - This is recommended to remove any built up sediment and keep the heater functioning as intended. Unplug, let water cool, then connect hose to drain and then open the valve. Refill water heater and restart per the instructions. Easy as that!

#7 - Grease Overhead Garage Door tracks - Keep your garage door moving freely by greasing the tracks. This is a good time to check all safety features of your door/motor as well.
